The ten-day Phase 2 MSDEED workshop started on 16th May 2022, with educators across Maharashtra gathered together at IISER for a grand brainstorming and idea-exchange program.
Manoj Deshpande has extensively focused on - Social Media - Changing Abusive Behaviour. He has expressed, " Harsh words don't break the bone, but they often break the heart and shake up confidence. If one carefully designed AI can help identify abusive intents to change the behaviour. He has presented detailed a case study on identifying Abusive intents in conversations between Teachers/Students.
Myelin has already developed algorithms to identify Abusive intents in conversations between Teachers/Students. Myelin determines the tone of the message and notifies the user about the same. This feature is significantly essential in today's age, considering the influence of diverse factors in the Education sphere.
"Studies of verbal abuses in the Education and learning field are limited. The impact on learning is more severe than physical violence because the target is the psychological aspect. The project and research aim to prevent abusive communication in Education—the form of verbal abuses of teachers due to the teacher-student power imbalance in learning in school. The form of teacher verbal abuses due to power inequality in learning stretches from students' rejection of opinions, allegations, belittling of ability and dignity of students, judgment and reproaches, coercion, to threats and outbursts of anger. 32,75,485 Messages were Exchanged with less than 1% abusive intents. The system was able to warn in 18% of cases."
